Graham Steele says the government of Nova Scotia will work with STM Quest to re-establish the service to Portland, Maine, for May 2014.
[YARMOUTH, NS] - Nova Scotia's economic development minister says the provincial government has reached a deal to restore an international ferry link from Yarmouth to the U.S. next year.
Graham Steele told radio station CJLS in Yarmouth that the government will work with STM Quest to re-establish the service to Portland, Maine, for May 2014.
STM Quest — a joint venture between U.S.-based companies ST Marine and Quest Navigation — was selected last month to set up and run the service.
The province received two other bids from Balearia Caribbean and P&O Ferries.
The ferry service was scrapped in December 2009 after the NDP government cut its subsidies.
But the province has offered $21 million over seven years to restart the service.
